Notice of District Bar Renumbering Effective Jan. 1

December 19, 2018/0 Comments/in Frontpage Article, News

Recently passed legislation redistricts relatively few counties, and our district’s current county makeup remains unchanged. However, the new law removes sub-district lettering from prosecutorial districts (e.g.,19A) and provides each prosecutorial district with a unique number (e.g., 19A becomes 25).  As you know, judicial district bars are coterminous with prosecutorial districts (except for the High Point District Bar).  All district bars other than Districts 1, 2, 10, and 26 have been re-numbered.  You can find a revised district bar list on the North Carolina State Bar website at https://www.ncbar.gov/media/730478/redistricting-table.jpg.

Effective January 1,2019, our district’s new number is 24.

Note: As of this writing, the Superior Court and District Court numbers have not been changed to match the new Prosecutorial District numbers.  Therefore, we will have a different Superior and District Court number than our Prosecutorial District. Guilford County will be District 18 for Superior/District Court, but District 24 for Prosecutorial District/District Bar.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter. Should you have any questions or require assistance, please contact me directly at 336-378-0300.

Stell: The Value of Your Insurance Policy

December 1, 2018/0 Comments/in Newsletter, Old Newsletter Articles

Have you ever struggled as you tried to help a client understand why they should hire you? Why they should be willing to pay their hard-earned dollars to you? Why their problem is one that is in need of a legal solution?

That’s a struggle faced by all firms or businesses that provide a service. We often don’t have a tangible product. Or if there is a tangible product – such as a will that can actually be printed on paper, the value is much more than the price of the paper.

At Lawyers Mutual we often say, we aren’t selling you an insurance policy – though you certainly have one that can be printed on paper – we are selling peace of mind.

Our peace of mind comes in the form of the many services that we provide. One service is providing CLE speakers for local bar meetings. We have had the good fortune to spend time with the Greensboro Bar at CLE events as well as social events. We always appreciate you inviting us over and we hope you will continue to do so. We are also available for in-house CLE for our insured firms. We offer topics ranging from ethics to professionalism, from risk management to cyber risks and fraud.

Lawyers Mutual’s HELP (Handling Emergency Legal Problems) team is here for you when you need us. Led by our in-house claims attorneys and outside counsel, our team has the training and resources to guide you through difficult professional times. We have helped attorneys with office support during medical emergencies such as heart attacks, as well as helped firms cope after the death of a partner. The features of our HELP team include: Assessment, Action Plan Development, and Client Protection. These services are offered at no cost, and often with no trigger of deductible, although every situation is unique. Our claims counsel can guide you through the process.

Another resource is our Claims Prevention program which includes our education and CLE programs, our risk alerts, and monthly e-newsletters, as well as the many Risk Management resources available on our website including checklists, forms, sample letters and toolkits.

We encourage you to think of our claims attorneys as your partner down the hall. Call our toll-free number at 800.662.8843 and talk with our claims attorneys about how to handle difficult clients, if and when you should fire a client, or how to handle a potential legal problem. Our claims counsel can also guide you through ethics or professionalism dilemmas. We also provide subpoena assistance. If you receive a subpoena, make sure your first call is to one of our claims attorneys to provide guidance and action steps for responding.

One of our most popular resources is our Claims Repair program which begins when a claim is reported.  We determine if the error can be corrected or the damage lessened to avoid a claim by a client. This program is led by an experienced team of in-house claims attorneys and outside counsel. Each day, these seasoned professionals work side-by-side with our insured attorneys on clams repairs large and small. Sometimes, claims can be fully repaired while other times the dollar amount of the loss is significantly reduced. The success of Claims Repair efforts is dependent on a timely claim report.  It is vital that a potential claim be reported to us as soon as the issue is discovered. Of particular note, our claims attorneys spend a great deal of time advising insureds on matters before they become a claim or before an insured would take action that could result in a future claim.

Lawyers Mutual Consulting & Services is a subsidiary of Lawyers Mutual. We will offer business development and marketing coaching to lawyers through a subscription, online platform that we hope to roll out in early 2019. We are also focused on helping lawyers develop succession plans. Succession planning does not mean retirement today, but rather building a plan that allows you to control your future and plan for the health and legacy of your law firm after your retirement. Call us for a lunch and learn program on developing a culture of succession planning in your firm.

I urge you not to think of Lawyers Mutual as an organization you only contact around policy renewal, but as a support system to your firm focused on best practices in risk management and in law practice management. We are always happy to speak with you and offer tips or advice on various situations you might encounter.

The practice of law is challenging. Peace of mind is hard to come by. We hope by supporting your bar-related insurance company through purchase of an insurance policy, you feel our support in your practice.

Camille Stell is President of Lawyers Mutual Consulting & Services. Continue this conversation by contacting Camille at camille@lawyersmutualconsulting.com or 800.662.8843.

Young Lawyers Section: Connections December 2018

December 1, 2018/0 Comments/in Newsletter, Old Newsletter Articles

The year is quickly coming to a close, but the YLS Section is just getting started. We are planning events for 2019 that we hope you will be excited about.  We will be doing more socials, more networking events, and more service events.  Save the date for our annual kickoff party on January 25, 2019.  It’s going to be fun!

As much as we love to see our members, we understand that December is a busy time of year, so YLS is going to take a break from our socials this month. We are going to join the party with the GBA on December 12, 2018 from 5:30p.m. to 7:30p.m. for the GBA annual holiday party to enjoy a night of fellowship, gift wrapping, prizes, and fun!

As we keep saying, one of our main goals this year is to serve our membership by providing service opportunities and activities that interest you.  We are working hard to think of new events and activities that will provide you with additional ways to interact with your peers.  We would like to encourage you consider what service opportunities and activities you want.  Do you want to go hiking with us? What about biking on the Greenway? Would you join a painting event led by a young lawyer?  If so, let us know! We would love to hear from you. Please email us with your ideas and suggestions at info@greensboroyls.org.

Finally, if you want more information about upcoming YLS events or to learn how you can get involved,  visit our website at www.greensboroyls.org, e-mail us (info@greensboroyls.org), or follow us on Facebook (Greensboro Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section). You can post fun events there, too!

Message from the President, December 2018

December 1, 2018/0 Comments/in Newsletter, Old Newsletter Articles

It is that time of the year again.  Many of you can identify with me when I say, “Time is fleeting.”  It seems like it wasn’t long ago when I was storing my Christmas decorations from the past holiday season.

If you recall, we presented a Fall CLE entitled “Using Mindfulness to Improve Your Legal Practice.”  The concept is based on the idea that we should develop an awareness of our thoughts and emotions, even in highly pressured situations.  In addition to an awareness, we should make efforts to control and focus our thoughts in order to manage stress and live healthier lives.  Many of us have ample opportunities to be consumed with thoughts about legal issues, litigants, family, or other personal matters.  If we aren’t careful, worries of the day can cause insomnia or anxiety, which can trigger many health-related conditions.

This topic is relevant because the holidays tend to cause a great deal of stress for the average person.  If is not purchasing the perfect gift, it may be dealing with difficult relatives or being in an environment with a person with whom you have a strained relationship.

I hope we all will consider engaging in relaxing activities, meditation or other mechanisms to decompress from the pressures and stress of the holidays.  As most of you know, this will be my first Christmas without my late husband.  I am sure it will be difficult.  However, I plan to focus on the gift of family and friends.  More importantly, I plan to give the gift of friendship and love to the people in my life.  I have learned over the past fifty plus years of life, that it is more blessed to give than to receive.  It warms my heart that, during this meeting year, our organization will: gift books to elementary students for Christmas; gift a clean record to defendants with records that have experienced difficulty gaining employment and/or being self-sufficient; gift meals to individuals at the Potter’s House; and provide many other opportunities to share in the gift of service to others.

Lastly, I invite you all to attend our annual Christmas party on December 12, 2018, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, at Elon Law School.  Join us as we come together for a festive time filled with familiar tunes, delectable treats and spiritous drinks.

Donations Still Needed for the Annual Elementary School Holiday Book Program

December 1, 2018/0 Comments/in Newsletter, Old Newsletter Articles

The holiday book program at Jones Elementary is a wonderful Greensboro Bar Association tradition. The gift-giving season is now upon us and we need your donation to keep this worthwhile program going.

With the support of member donations, the Elementary School Project committee will give books to the K-5 children in the Traditional English program at Jones Elementary School downtown. We will purchase the books from the Scholastic Book Fair at Jones Elementary, which also serves as a school fundraiser. We invite you to help wrap the books in colorful paper at our Annual Holiday Party and deliver them to the children in December.  It is truly a joy to see the kids’ excitement when the books are unwrapped!

This year we will receive a $500 matching grant from the Greensboro Bar Association Foundation if we can raise at least $500 in member donations. Donate now online, or mail your check made payable to the Greensboro Bar Association Foundation, with “Elementary School Project” in the memo line, to:

Greensboro Bar Association Foundation
P.O. Box 1825
Greensboro, NC 27402

Donations are tax-deductible, with receipts sent to each donor. If you have any questions regarding the book drive, please contact Adam Kerr at adam@kerrlawnc.com or (336) 500-7599.

To date, donations receipts are a little slow so we ask all to support this wonderful program.  Thank you in advance for your continuing support – the children and teachers at Jones thank you too!

GBA’s 2018 Pro Bono Award Recipients

November 1, 2018/0 Comments/in Newsletter, Old Newsletter Articles

The Greensboro Bar Association’s 2018 Pro Bono Award was presented to Tom Carruthers and Rosetta Davidson Davis at the October 18th member dinner.  Since the law change in December 2017 to make many more people eligible for expungements, Legal Aid has struggled to keep up with the demand for its services.  When the City Attorney’s office became aware of this need, Mr. Carruthers and Ms. Davis stepped up to take on many of these cases.  Since April, Tom Carruthers and Rosetta Davidson Davis have handled more than 30 expunction referrals from Legal Aid and have made a huge difference in the lives of all these clients.  This is an exemplary effort that is certainly deserves recognition.  They have made a tremendous difference in the lives of many people through this extraordinary effort.  The Greensboro Bar Association is pleased to recognize their service.
