The Greensboro Bar Association Foundation is pleased to announce $4,750 in grants to two organizations in the Greensboro area. These grants are made in support of organizations and activities that relate to the legal profession, legal education, the administration of justice and more generally such activities that foster the honor and integrity of the law, facilitate the administration of justice, promote the study of law, maintain a law library, promote suitable standards of legal education and promote activities which epitomize the contribution of lawyers to the community.
$750.00 for Corporation of Guardianship to sponsor a CLE on the topics of Guardianships, Special Needs Trusts or Powers of Attorney, etc. that will be presented to members of GBA, as well as members of surrounding bars.
$4,000.00 to the Court Watch Process Server Program to assist with serving defendants in child support cases to aid in collecting child support for children and families, which will increase child support collections.
An additional $1000.00 was approved for the purchase of coffee and coffee supplies for the jury assembly room in the Greensboro Courthouse. The coffee service is utilized and appreciated by jurors on a regular basis.

The Greensboro Bar Association’s Second Chance Project, in partnership with Legal Aid of NC-Greensboro Office, will be presenting a FREE CLE for Greensboro Bar Association Members on Expunction of North Carolina Criminal Records. This CLE will be an overview of changes to North Carolina statutes relating to expunction and will provide training on how to assist a client through the process of getting an eligible criminal charge or conviction expunged.

The Greensboro Bar Association’s 2018 Pro Bono Award was presented to Tom Carruthers and Rosetta Davidson Davis at the October 18th member dinner. Since the law change in December 2017 to make many more people eligible for expungements, Legal Aid has struggled to keep up with the demand for its services. When the City Attorney’s office became aware of this need, Mr. Carruthers and Ms. Davis stepped up to take on many of these cases. Since April, Tom Carruthers and Rosetta Davidson Davis have handled more than 30 expunction referrals from Legal Aid and have made a huge difference in the lives of all these clients. This is an exemplary effort that is certainly deserves recognition. They have made a tremendous difference in the lives of many people through this extraordinary effort. The Greensboro Bar Association is pleased to recognize their service.

The holiday book program at Jones Elementary is a wonderful Greensboro Bar Association tradition. As the gift-giving season draws near, we hope you will make a donation to keep this worthwhile program going.
With the support of member donations, the Elementary School Project committee will give books to the K-5 children in the Traditional English program at Jones Elementary School downtown. We will purchase the books from the Scholastic Book Fair at Jones Elementary, which also serves as a school fundraiser. We will invite you to help wrap the books in colorful paper at our Annual Holiday Party and deliver them to the children in December.
This year we are hoping to receive a $500 matching grant from the Greensboro Bar Association Foundation, which will make it possible to also purchase books for the 5th graders at Jones as a graduation gift this spring. Erin C. V. Bailey works exclusively in the areas of ERISA, employee benefits and estate planning. She is currently licensed in NC, KY, WV and GA. Her work includes advising clients on qualified retirement plan matters involved in mergers, acquisitions and business sales, including plan terminations, plan mergers and plan compliance. In addition, her estate planning practice concentrates on complex estate planning matters, including the drafting of wills and trusts, estate administration, business succession planning and spear heading family office services. Erin received her undergraduate degree (B.A., with distinction) from Cornell University and her law degree (J.D., with honors) from Emory University School of Law.
Alan B. Felts
Alan B. Felts focuses his practice primarily on litigating and resolving commercial, business and construction disputes. Additionally, he has filed and prosecuted numerous trademark applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and has been involved with litigation involving trademark, service mark, and trade dress infringement in numerous Federal Courts. Alan received his undergraduate degree (B.S.) from Clemson University and his law degree (J.D.) from Wake Forest University School of Law.
Blake P. Hurt
Blake P. Hurt focuses his practice on preparing, filing, and prosecuting patents and trademarks before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and copyrights before the U.S. Copyright Office. Additionally, Blake advises clients on the merits of seeking foreign patent and trademark protection around the world, particularly by filing PCT utility patent applications, Hague System design patent applications, and Madrid Protocol trademark applications. He received his undergraduate degree in Cellular Biology from Kalamazoo College and his law degree (J.D.) from Wake Forest University School of Law.
November is often a time when we slow down and consider how grateful we are for the people and things in our life. Although I try to maintain an attitude of gratitude all year long and have a practice of listing one thing I am thankful for in my planner daily, I am especially grateful this year. I am thankful that I am allowed the privilege of practicing law and that I am able to serve you as President of the Greensboro Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section. I am so thankful to be a part of this community of lawyers. I hope you, too, will take time to reflect on the things that make you grateful this season.

A Successful Swearing-in Ceremony
This year’s Swearing-In Ceremony took place on Friday, October 12, 2018 at 3:00p.m. in Courtroom 3 of the United States District Court in downtown Greensboro. We deeply appreciate all the support from those who attended the event and we would like to especially thank Judge Eagles, Judge Craig, Judge Shields, Judge Vincent, Clerk Brubaker, Ms. Roberta Curry, and all of the other individuals who participated and helped us facilitate such a special event. We look forward to continuing to welcome the newly sworn-in attorneys to the GBA.
A Joint Networking Event
YLS is excited to partner with the GBA Membership Committee to support the GBA’s Mix and Mingle, which will take place on November 8, 2018, at Joymongers. YLS members, we want to see you! Greetings! As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, I would like to take the opportunity to thank members of the Greensboro Bar Association Board and committee members for their servant leadership and getting our year off to a great start. In addition, I would like to thank each of you for being a member of our great organization.
At this time, when our country is more divided politically than ever, a spirit of thanksgiving and respect for mankind is necessary for change. I contend, we would be better served if we focus on our commonalities, instead of our differences. As attorneys, we work collectively to confront challenges and resolve cases. Perhaps, we will play a major role in “being the change…”, as was suggested by Mahatma Ghandi.
We have a great opportunity to positively impact everyone we encounter by demonstrating our appreciation of others through respect, professionalism and quality services. There are many servant leaders that are working diligently in appreciation of our community, citizens of Greensboro and surrounding areas. One of those individuals is Attorney and Greensboro City Councilman Justin Outling. Attorney Outling practices with Brooks Pierce Law Group and will serve as the speaker. His topic will be “Making Greensboro.” The lunch meeting will be held on November 15, 2018 in the Kress Building.
In closing, it is my hope that each of you will have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday, full of joy, bountiful delectable treats and soul stirring warmth of heart delight that comes from spending time
with loved ones.
Page High School’s Mock Trial program has been growing over the past few years and we are in desperate need of 1-2 attorney advisers to assist the students in preparation for their February Mock Trial Competition this year and/or in following years as well. We are looking for any attorneys with time to volunteer. If you have prior Mock Trial or litigation experience, that would be a great asset to the program. However, we are happy to train any attorney that is just interested in volunteering. The time commitment is minor and can be as much or as little as you have to offer the students. These are a great group of kids who are highly motivated and hard working.

We hope you’ll join our Greensboro Bar Association’s Human Race Team this year! We will be supporting two nonprofits in Greensboro area. If you’ve never participated in the Human Race, it’s the nonprofit community’s 5k. Since 1994, The Volunteer Center of Greensboro has managed the race, and helped raise over 4.5 million dollars for hundreds of local nonprofits. You can walk, run, or roll the 5k course. Mark your calendars for May 4, 2019 and stay tuned for more information.
It is the time of year when we begin to think of thankfulness and client appreciation. Perhaps you are working on a holiday card list or thinking about gifts to send your clients. Showing appreciation to your clients is a way to continue to build and solidify your client relationships and to encourage referrals and recommendations.
Maintaining excellent client relationships is among the best ways to avoid bar grievances and malpractice claims. While it is important to wow your client with your legal skills, showing thanks and appreciation shows your business savvy and emotional intelligence.
